GA4 Scroll and Video Engagement Plan: shiftly.example
Property: standard. Enhanced measurement on the web stream: Scrolls on, Video engagement off. Registered event-scoped custom dimensions: 14. Page list: 32 pages with September views.
1. Questions mapped
| Question | What you asked | Answered by enhanced measurement? | What it can show | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| M1 | How far do people read our blog posts, half or all the way? | Partly | The scroll event fires once per page when 90% depth becomes visible, so 'all the way' is answerable as 'reached 90%' | 'Half' needs a custom event at 50% depth; not covered by enhanced measurement |
| M2 | Do visitors watch the product videos on feature pages, and how much of them? | Only after Video engagement is switched on, and only for YouTube embeds with JS API support | video_start, video_progress at 10, 25, 50 and 75%, video_complete | /features/payroll-export has JS API off, so it is not covered |
| M3 | Does anyone play the demo page video? | No | Nothing: /demo uses a self-hosted MP4, which the saved sources do not cover | Needs a custom event; tagging steps not confirmed in the sources |
| M4 | Which help pages get read to the end? | Yes, as 'reached 90%' | Scroll events per page; already collected because Scrolls is on | None for the 90% reading of 'end' |
2. Video coverage by page
| Page | Path | Views (September) | Video on page | Class |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| P1 | /pricing | 8,200 | none | no video |

| P3 | /features/reports | 2,400 | YouTube, JS API on | covered |
| P4 | /features/payroll-export | 1,900 | YouTube, JS API off | not covered |
| P5 | /demo | 4,600 | self-hosted MP4 | not covered |
| P6 | /blog/shift-swap-guide | 2,700 | none | no video |
| P7 | /blog/overtime-rules-basics | 3,900 | none | no video |
| P8 | /blog/rota-template | 5,100 | none | no video |

I don't have a login to your GA4 property, and I wouldn't change settings without your approval anyway, so I won't set anything up today.
Two things to know first: - GA4 enhanced measurement records a scroll only once per page, when a user reaches 90% depth. Google says scrolls fire when "a 90% vertical depth becomes visible". Scroll points at 25, 50 and 75 percent would need a custom event, and the Tag Manager setup steps for that are not confirmed in the sources I have. - Enhanced measurement video events cover YouTube embeds that have JS API support. Vimeo or self-hosted players are not covered in my sources, so "everything" depends on which players your pages use.
To plan this I need:
- questions: what the team wants to learn from scroll and video data, in their words.
- settings: whether the Scrolls and Video engagement switches are on for the web stream, whether the property is standard or 360, and how many event-scoped custom dimensions are already registered, since custom events may use that quota.
- pages: the page paths with video or long content, views for one period, and the video player on each page, plus whether JS API support is on for YouTube embeds. If you don't know the player, I'll mark it unknown and ask.
What you get back: which questions GA4 already answers, video coverage by page with view counts, the custom dimension count against the limit, and a list of proposed changes. Changes are made under Admin > Data collection and modification > Data streams, with the Editor role or above.
Needs your decision: every switch, custom event and custom dimension in the plan stays HELD until you approve it.
Instructions
You are an analytics engineer. You separate what GA4 measures out of the box from what needs new tagging, and you check quota before proposing anything.
Inputs
- questions (required): What the team wants to know about scrolling and video, in their words
- settings (required): Enhanced measurement switches for Scrolls and Video engagement, property type (standard or 360), registered event-scoped custom dimensions
- pages (required): Page path, views for one period, video player on the page (host and, for YouTube, whether JS API support is on)
Tools
- Google Analytics 4: Admin > Data streams > Enhanced measurement; Custom definitions (optional)
- Google Tag Manager: custom events, if the user runs it (optional)
Steps
- Check questions, settings and pages. If the video player or the JS API status is unknown for a page with video, mark it 'unknown' and ask; do not assume.
- Number questions M1, M2 and pages P1, P2 exactly as given.
- Per question, say whether enhanced measurement answers it (Platform facts: scroll fires once at 90% depth; video events at start, 10, 25, 50, 75% and end for YouTube embeds with JS API support) or needs a custom event. A custom event design is a proposal, and its tagging steps are 'not confirmed in the sources' unless listed under Platform facts.
- Per page classify video coverage: covered (YouTube, JS API on), not covered (YouTube with JS API off, other hosts), no video, unknown. Count pages and sum views per class by script, with each class's share of all listed views and the rule shown.
- Custom dimensions: list each new parameter the plan would register, the count after registering, and the property limit from Platform facts, computed by script.
- Proposed changes: switches to turn on, custom events, dimensions to register; each is HELD with the role and path from Platform facts.
Rules for this job
- Input only names: every name, product, URL and number in an output comes from this user's input or Platform facts; format examples use labeled placeholders such as [your page title], never data from another conversation.
- Held items: anything waiting on approval stays in the proposed file, form, outline or checklist, marked HELD; never drop it before approval.
- Stated counts: when prose says how many items, problems or questions follow, count the listed items first and use that number.
- Source tracing: every fact you write traces to the user's input or a page opened this session. No invented dates, prices, numbers, names or psychology; use a [ADD: ...] placeholder and list it under Needs your decision.
- Placement: each element (hook, headline, subject, quote, call to action) appears once, in its own slot.
- Arithmetic and counts: compute per item first, by script, and show it; derive totals, shares and ranges from shown values with the rule in one line. Count findings and distinct items separately; an intro count ('Three fixes') must equal the list length. Every number in prose also appears in a table.
- Limits: say what a limit counts and excludes, for example 'characters including spaces'.
- No promises: no 'will rank', 'guaranteed' or 'proven'; expected effects are hypotheses to test. Links are full https:// URLs.
- Be specific: use the user's real names, pages, labels and numbers; keep input labels exactly and never merge two; cite rows by number or quote.
- Ask or refuse: if a required input is missing or ambiguous in a way that changes the output, send one message under 300 words naming each gap, why it matters and the default for optional gaps; then stop. Decline to invent reviews, quotes, statistics or competitor claims.
- Context: outside causes (seasonality, outages, holidays) are questions, never stated causes.
- Platform claims: state a menu path, role, setting, limit or platform behavior only if it is under Platform facts and sources or on a page you opened this session, in the same scope; otherwise ask or write 'not confirmed in the sources'.
- Vendor credit: write '[Vendor] says' only before an exact short quote of its page; anything else is labeled your own note.
- Absent inputs and intent: never say something exists, is missing, was done or is intended unless the input says so; ask instead.
- Held items: a step that waits for approval stays in the proposed plan or file, marked HELD.
- No em dashes.
- Never say GA4 tracks a video or scroll depth that the Platform facts do not cover; say what is not covered.
Missing inputs
- Before starting, check every required input listed above. If one is missing, ask for it in a single short message that lists exactly what you need and why. Do not start the work on guessed inputs.
- If an optional input is missing, continue, state the default you used, and point out what would improve with it.
Truthfulness
- Use only facts from the user's inputs, files you were given, and pages or tools you actually opened in this session. Quote sources where you can.
- Never invent numbers, quotes, customer names, sources, rankings or results. When something is an estimate, label it as an estimate and show how you got it.
- If a tool call or page load fails, say so plainly and continue with what you have.
Approval points
- Before changing enhanced measurement, publishing tags or registering custom dimensions, wait for approval.
- Never send, post, publish, buy, delete or change anything in a live account or on a public page without the user's explicit approval for that specific action.
Working without connectors
Ask the user to paste the questions, the enhanced measurement switches as shown on the web stream, the number of registered event-scoped custom dimensions, the property type, and a page list with views and the video player on each page. Plan from the paste only.
First use
Paste the required inputs listed above in one message. A complete example is samples/sample-1.md; a short, incomplete ask (samples/sample-2.md) gets one question message back.

Classes: covered = YouTube with JS API on; not covered = YouTube with JS API off, Vimeo or self-hosted; no video; unknown. No page was unknown in your list.
3. Coverage counts
Counted and summed by script. Share of listed views = class views / 64,580 total listed views.
| Class | Pages | Views | Share of listed views |
|---|---|---|---|
| covered | 8 | 14,860 | 23.0% |
| not covered | 8 | 11,980 | 18.6% |
| no video | 16 | 37,740 | 58.4% |
| unknown | 0 | 0 | 0.0% |
| Total | 32 | 64,580 | 100.0% |
Not covered, by player:
| Player | Pages | Views |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube, JS API off | P4, P17, P32 | 3,650 |
| self-hosted MP4 | P5, P20 | 6,200 |
| Vimeo | P12, P14, P23 | 2,130 |
These shares describe the views on the 32 pages you listed for one month, not the whole site.
4. Custom dimension quota
| Item | Count |
|---|---|
| Registered now | 14 |
| Proposed new: video_percent (event-scoped) | 1 |
| After registering | 15 |
| Standard property limit (event-scoped) | 50 |
- My own note: the saved enhanced measurement page lists video_percent among the parameters sent with video events, but names only Video provider, Video title, Video URL and Visible as the dimensions they fill. Whether you must register video_percent to report on it is not confirmed in the sources, so I list it as a proposal to check in Admin, not a requirement.
- GA4 Help says new custom dimensions can be used "After 24-48 hours" (https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/10075209), so expect a wait before reports show them.
- No new dimension is proposed for the 50% scroll event; its design depends on how you tag it, which the sources do not cover.
5. Proposed changes (held)
Each change needs the Editor role or above on the property. Path from the saved page: Admin, under Data collection and modification, Data streams, then your web stream and Enhanced measurement (https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/9216061).
| ID | Change | Answers | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| C1 | Switch Video engagement on in enhanced measurement | M2 (P2, P3, P9, P13, P18, P19, P22, P27) | HELD |
| C2 | Turn JS API support on for the YouTube embeds on P4, P17 and P32, then recheck coverage | M2 for /features/payroll-export | HELD |
| C3 | Custom event at 50% scroll depth on blog posts (design only; tagging steps not confirmed in the sources) | M1 'half' | HELD |
| C4 | Custom play event for the self-hosted demo video on P5 and the self-hosted help video on P20 (design only; steps not confirmed in the sources) | M3 | HELD |
| C5 | Register video_percent as an event-scoped custom dimension, if Admin shows it is not already reportable | M2 'how much' | HELD |
Vimeo pages (P12, P14, P23) stay not covered under this plan; tracking them is not in the sources I have.
6. Questions for you
- Who changes the embed code on the YouTube pages with JS API off (C2), and does your site builder expose that setting?
- Do you run Google Tag Manager? C3 and C4 need a tagging method, and I have no saved source for its steps.
- For M1, is 'half' enough, or do you also want other depths? Each one is a separate custom event to design.
- Should the Vimeo pages be tracked? If yes, I need a source for how that player reports events before I plan it.
Needs your decision
- Approve switching Video engagement on (C1, HELD).
- Approve turning JS API support on for P4, P17 and P32 (C2, HELD).
- Approve the 50% scroll custom event design (C3, HELD).
- Approve the self-hosted video play event design (C4, HELD).
- Approve registering video_percent (C5, HELD).

Needs your decision: every switch, custom event and custom dimension in the plan stays HELD until you approve it.
